1872. Four years after assuming office in the wake of Andrew Johnson's impeachment, Radical Republican President Benjamin Wade is preparing to seek a second term. The revolutionary reforms of Reconstruction are threatened by continued violence from ex-Rebel guerrillas; combined with signs of weakening resolve within President Wades own party, the nation faces the possibility of renewed civil war. To prevent this, Wade forges a political alliance with the nation's most popular military figure, General Ulysses S. Grant. But will even this be enough to sustain the Union's hard-won triumphs, and Wades hopes for a stronger, fully unified America?
