In November 1861, pro-Union sympathizers in eastern Tennessee nearly failed in their efforts to destroy a series of key Confederate-controlled railroad bridges throughout their region, ahead of an expected invasion by Union forces from Kentucky. Yet the "Bridge Attacks" narrowly succeeded, the Union army arrived to secure the territory and soon the entire state. Following this, the East Tennessee Convention--the region's main Unionist assembly--became a vital part of the state's Republican military government, under former U.S. Senator Andrew Johnson.
By 1863, however, cracks are beginning to show in this body. Some of its more "Radical" members--most of all William "Parson" Brownlow, newspaper editor and Unionist firebrand--believe that Military Governor Johnson has all but abandoned the Union's goals in the American Civil War, threatening the rule of Unionism in Tennessee and perhaps beyond. To prevent this, and establish state and regional rule by true Unionists, they are considering drastic measures, perhaps even to the point of armed rebellion...
