Above Rubies

(1969)
A novel by

After years of a Cinderella-like existence with a selfish, demanding aunt and uncle, Merry was thrilled to find that another aunt had left her a house far away in a quiet Scottish village. Here was her chance to get away, to live her own life, and devote herself, as she had always wanted, to writing - and Merry took it with both hands. She soon settled down in Kilbraggan, was welcomed in the little community, and made some pleasant friendships - in particular with Benjamin Brendan and Nigel Kilpratick. But the delightful idyll didn't last long, for Merry's calculating cousin Sylvia appeared on the scene, determined, it would appear, to spoil all Merry's plans. Benjamin told Merry crossly that she was foolish to let Sylvia get away with it - but after all, wasn't he falling under Sylvia's spell, just like the rest of them?
