When Helen Ferguson's father loses his job, the family move from Scotland to Bolton, where Helen gets a job at Langley Mills. There she becomes friendly with elderly Mr Forbes, an adviser to the firm, who asks her to do him a favour by taking a parcel, containing a stamp album, to his sister-in-law, Agnes Turnbull, in Auchinleck, Scotland. But why does Agnes deny that she is the woman in question, and why does Helen find herself so attracted to Agnes's son, John?
