Assault on Sugar Island
(2016)(The second book in the Jack's Justice series)
A novel by Michael Carrier
A case of jealousy, revenge, Jihad and murder...
In Assault on Sugar Island, Suicide by Jihad, Jack and Kate must deal not only with Jack's incarceration (for a crime he most certainly did commit), but they must also navigate the treacherous waters of a crazed writer of fiction who is hell bent on drawing down upon himself the wrath of fundamental Islam and Jihad.
As the story begins, retired Chicago detective Jack Handler finds himself in a federal prison camp. He just learns that his case has been overturned. Unfortunately, his enemies also hear the news and plot to kill him. This is where Henry comes in. Henry, AKA Chuchip Kalyesveh, a very big Native American (Hopi tribe) who is known for his pugilistic skills, comes to Jack's rescue. Henry and Jack immediately become best friends. So, when Jack's client (the writer) is attacked by machete-wielding Jihadists, Jack calls on Henry to help.
Jack's challenge is immense.
How do you save a man who does not wish to be saved?
When the battle follows Henry and the writer onboard the Sugar Island Ferry, everyone on the island feels the fury of angry Islamists. And, sadly, old enemies find a way to have Jack arrested again.
Top Shelf Murder Mystery - Riveting. Being a Murder-Mystery "JUNKIE" this book is definitely a keeper ... can't put it down ... read it again type of book ... and it is very precise to the lifestyles in Upper Michigan. Very well researched. I am a resident of this area. His attention to detail is great. I have to rate this book in the same class or better than authors Michael Connelly, James Patterson, and Steve Hamilton. - Shelldrakeshores Being a Michigan native, I was immediately drawn to this book. Michael Carrier is right in step with his contemporaries James Patterson and David Baldacci. I am anxious to read more of his work. I highly recommend this one! - J. Henningsen A fast and interesting read. Michael ends each chapter with a hook that makes you want to keep reading. The relationship between father and daughter is compelling. Good book for those who like a quick moving detective story where the characters often break the "rules" for the greater good! I'm looking forward to reading the author's next book. - Flower Lady Move over, Patterson, I now have a new favorite author, Jack and his daughter make a great tag team, great intrigue, and diversions. I don't usually finish a book in the course of a week, but read this one in two sittings so it definitely had my attention. I am looking forward to the next installment. Bravo. - Northland Press My husband is not a reader - he probably hasn't read a book since his last elementary school book report was due. But ... he took my copy of Murder on Sugar Island to deer camp and read the whole thing in two days. After he recommended the book to me, I read it - being the book snob that I am, I thought I had the whole plot figured out within the first few pages, but a few chapters later, I was mystified once again. After that surprise ending, we ordered the other two Getting to Know Jack books. - Erin W. I enjoyed this book very much. It was very entertaining, and the story unfolded in a believable manner. Jack Handler is a likable character. But you would not like to be on his wrong side. Handler made that very clear in Jack and the New York Death Mask. This book (Murder on Sugar Island) was the first book in the Getting to Know Jack series that I read. After I read Death Mask, I discovered just how tough Jack Handler really was. - Deb Left on the edge of my seat after the last book, I could not wait for the next chapter to unfold and Michael Carrier did not disappoint! I truly feel I know his characters better with each novel and I especially like the can-do/will-do attitude of Jack. Keep up the fine work, Michael, and may your pen never run dry! - SW
