Three Broken Hearts
(2012)(The third book in the Kansas City Romance series)
A novel by Mildred Colvin
Contemporary Romance - 64,000 words
Kent builds houses. He's started a new housing project and needs an interior designer for the model homes. Amy and her partner seem perfect for the job. In fact, Amy holds more appeal than only her expertise in design. They could easily fall in love and get married, except for one thing. Kent's preteen daughter, Sierra, doesn't want Amy for a step-mother. She wants her dad to marry her mother's identical twin sister so she can feel she has her mother back.
Excerpt from the book:
"Do you want to talk about it?" Cassie patted Amy's hand.
Amy stood with a short laugh. "Don't worry about me, Cassie. I'm sure having a relationship is over rated, anyway."
She added. "Yours excluded, of course."
Cassie laughed. "Tim and I get into it every little bit. He squeezes the toothpaste from the middle. I squeeze the bottom. You know. Important stuff like that." She sobered then. "Amy, just because you can't have something doesn't mean you immediately stop wanting it."
Amy felt the truth of Cassie's words as the roar of a truck sounded outside, growing louder until it stopped just short of the house. Kent had arrived.
Amy's heart pounded. Part of her wanted to rush into Kent's arms and stay there forever. The more reasonable part urged her to find a place to hide where he could never find her. Neither won. Amy stood her ground and waited.
"It's Kent, isn't it?" Cassie asked.
At Amy's nod, she wheeled her chair toward the master bedroom. "I just remembered something that needs to be done back here."
Amy sent a look of desperation toward Cassie. Before she could stop her from leaving, Kent shoved the door open and strode into the room.
Neither spoke. Kent stood with his feet planted apart and his arms crossed while his dark, brown eyes bore into Amy's. She refused to cower and met his scrutiny with far more bravado than she felt.
"Why'd you back out last night?" Kent's voice was soft in direct contrast to his posture.
"I had something else to do." If only she could run from his overpowering presence.
"Like what? Going to bed with the chickens and refusing to answer your door?"
"My door?"
Kent frowned. "I pounded on your door last night after church for at least ten minutes. I gave up after your next door neighbor stuck her head out to see what the racket was about."
"I didn't hear you knock. I was probably asleep." So she hadn't been dreaming after all. "You shouldn't have come by, anyway."
"Why not, Amy?" Kent reached out, but she moved away. "I thought we had something. I hope we do still."
