Bernard Harris is a Pinkerton Agent with a problem. He’s supposed to be going undercover to pose as Billy Savage, an entrepreneur who is investing in an illegal railroad smuggling scheme from Denver. But everyone knows that Billy Savage is supposed to be visiting San Francisco with his wife, Diane, and Bernard isn’t married. There are no female Pinkerton Agents at the Denver office, and he’d need to live in such close quarters with the woman, that he couldn’t ask someone to pose in the position with him. There’s only one solution—he needs to marry.

Eleanor Keller’s father was a respected judge in Fredericksburg Virginia, and as his only child he had designs on making her a successful lawyer in spite of the fact that she’s a woman. But after his death, Eleanor finds that even her seemingly faithful clients have dropped her, and she can find no work. Dejected, alone, and wanting a fresh start, she decides to answer the advertisement looking for professional, strong women to become mail-order brides in Colorado. Perhaps out west, she’ll find an appreciation for her talents.
