Prudence Sinclair, a young widow from the South, finds herself at a crossroads. Her life had been one of loss and sorrow since the end of the War. She longs for a fresh start. It's a choice between continuing to live the past or take a leap of faith into the unknown by marrying a man before she even has a chance to meet him. When she travels out West, she finds herself matched to a Black former Union soldier who is the mayor of the town.

Widower Nathaniel Anderson had no idea the woman he married would be a Southern belle, but he needs a mother for his daughter, Victoria, who takes an immediate liking to her new stepmother. Though they only married for the sake of providing a family for his daughter, as they get to know each other, perhaps they can become more.

When adversity comes in the former of his dead wife's family and their demands, Nathaniel and Prudence have to make a hard decision -- do they succumb to the pressures of the day or forge on to brighter tomorrow together?
