With no recognisable warning, the silence overwhelmed the world in the pause between two breaths. One moment the people of the earth were engaged in all the activities and diversions that fill existence from birth to death; the next moment they were engulfed in soundless, speechless chaos. No country, no nation, no city or community escaped. First was the bewilderment, then the terror, and then the universal mob panic.
