One bitter Siberian night in the winter of 1758, Henryk Barinski escaped from the imprisonment to which the Russian Secret Chancellery had sentenced him. Helped by fur trappers, he made his way to England, but before he could reach London, he was press ganged into service on a British ship. The Seven Years' War was raging, and Henryk experienced the sweltering carnage of battle as well as the disease and brutalities which were then all part of a sailor's life in the Royal Navy.
