Alone in a society of men, on the equator, Olga Le Blanc is occupied by her lovers, her tame gorilla, and her own good looks. The scene is the Congo, where, above the swamps and marshes and forests, rise great mountains, volcanic, snowcapped, veiled in smoking clouds, the home of the elephant and the gorilla. It is September, 1939. The Germans have just marched into Poland, and von Brandt is about to put into execution his schemes of sabotage. Against this fantastic background, to the sound of Congo drums there is played a drama of life and death in which the graceful sophistication of the over-civilized is set in counterpoint to tropic lust and savagery.
