Susannah Roperson and her half-sister Margaret are distraught when, one stormy evening, Margaret's mother falls to her death from the cliff path near their home on the south coast of England. A second death soon follows, however, and although the inquest rules that both tragedies were accidental, Susannah is by no means certain that at least one of the 'accidents' was not, in fact, something altogether more sinister...
