The few forlorn spectators craned forward to look at the bride, from whom, however, Dan turned just outside the church, accompanying me a few yards away from the carriage which stood waiting. With sensations of shame, trusting that nobody would see what was taking place, I put the packet of bank-notes into his hand. "Six thousand?" he cried, thrusting them into his breast pocket. "That's the amount," I answered. "Well, I can't stay to count them," he said, and rejoining Kitty as she stood silently at Geraldine's side, he opened the carriage door. "We ought really to have had a meal and a bottle of the boy on the strength of it," he exclaimed, whilst Kitty seemed to be hesitating whether or not to offer me her hand. "Good-bye, Kitty," I said. "Oh, good-bye, Luke!" "And the best of good luck!" I added. "You--you will give my--my love to uncle!" she faltered. "Now, Kitty, hurry up," cried Dan. "Good-bye, Elder," he continued, and with merely a nod to Geraldine took his seat by Kitty's side. Geraldine put up her umbrella as the horses started, and the last we saw of the pair at that time was Dan's cheerful face at the window. Then I think a sense of anticlimax fell upon us both, and after gazing in the direction of the carriage for a few moments we walked towards the end of the narrow street. There, Geraldine, saying she should take a cab back to Bayswater, also said "Good-bye," and the same evening I was back at Westcastle, sitting in the gardenroom, relating for my father's benefit the various incidents...
