In 1916, thousands of Krag rifles disappeared in New Mexico. In fact, the entire train carrying them vanished into the desert without a trace. James Whitlaw, the railroad dispatcher, was implicated in their disappearance. Whitlaw is in New Mexico in forced retirement, taking flying lessons in a Jenny bi-plane from an Army pilot. But that isn't his primary reason for being on the violent Mexican border . . .
