Murder in the Hearse Degree

(2002)
(The fourth book in the Hitchcock Sewell series)
A novel by

In the fourth instalment in the popular hearse mystery series, Libby, a former flame of undertaker-sleuth Hitchock Sewell, has returned to town with her two children, but minus one husband and one nanny. The husband was left behind, but the nanny, Sophie, is missing. As soon as Hitch starts to nose around, Sophie turns up in the Severn River - dead, and just a little pregnant. The police suspect suicide, but Sophie's mom is adamant it's murder. Hitch races around between Baltimore, Washington and Annapolis looking for answers, but finds nothing but questions. Fortunately for Hitch, there is the ever effervescent Julia, rumpled Pete Munger, Aunt Billie, a wise-guy tabloid reporter, and a host of endearing oddballs to keep Hitch's spirits light, even as the case darkens, making this another pitch-perfect mystery in a series that never disappoints, always surprises, and keeps the laughs - and the corpses - rolling right along.
