Walden West (1961) and Return to Walden West (1970 are two of August Derleth’s most beloved books. These volumes contain loving character sketches of the distinctive individuals who populate Derleth’s fictional town of Sac Prairie; many of the sketches are based on actual people he knew in his hometown of Sauk City, Wisconsin. But Derleth wrote many other sketches that remain uncollected and unpublished. This volume contains some of the most striking of these works. It leads off with “A Town Is Built,” an unpublished series of portraits of the French and German immigrants who settled Sac Prairie in the 19th century. Other works, such as “Evenings in Wisconsin and “Trees on the Landscape,” exhibit Derleth’s sensitivity to the topographical beauty of the area. All these pieces reveal August Derleth’s skill at character portrayal and his grasp of how history and landscape play a vital role in the formation of the human psyche.
