Sumerford's Autumn
(2015)(The fourth book in the Historical Mysteries Collection series)
A novel by Barbara Gaskell Denvil
Perfect for fans of CJ Sansom, SW Perry, SJ Parris and SG Maclean
This is an interweaving plot of treason, piracy and murder, wrapped up with conspiracy and intrigue.
A king trying to keep his throne. A sister looking for her brothers killer.
And Four brothers, each trying to find their purpose
England, 1487. Ludovic Sumerford knows he'll never see a penny from his father's estate. His three older brothers will make sure of that. Fortunately, his smuggling venture brings in more than a few sovereigns. But when he tells a local woman about the sudden death of her brother, money is the least of his worries.
Meanwhile, King Henrys feelings of insecurity are testing the country to breaking point. He quietly seethes and plots, while rumours of a man claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne of England, cause poor decisions. Ludovic, incriminated in the treasonous plot, captured and tortured, must find a way to gain his freedom.
Orphaned Alysson has nothing left now another brother is gone. But she won't leave it there. Knowing he was murdered; she seeks to find the truth. But taking a job in the Sumerfords household, Alyssons naiveté cannot last long. Where bitter feuds simmer with treachery and murder. No sooner does she arrive than the killer strikes againand again.
What readers are saying:
This was definitely a character-driven story. With atmosphere and attention to detail.
The whole book was an adrenalin rush.
Tension rose like thermometer's mercury in a heatwave. The exchange between the brothers was measured and masterful. The author moved the reader to the inexorable confrontation. It didn't happen. It erupted. The movement was lightening paced.
I didn't want to pass on the opportunity to thank the author for this sublime escape from modern life.
Her scenes are so vivid, I could almost feel myself there. I could see a sequel to this book as I definitely want more!!
This book is a definite 5 STARS!!
