Much like John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, Grand River is a town dying. There is a hopelessness reflected in the faces of the people in the small Native American village. Laughter has all but vanished, along with most of the business that had once thrived along Main Street. Floods, droughts and winters cold enough to kill, the loss of jobs and the villages remote location have added to its problems. In the middle of the great river, rising high above the quays, stands Tower Island, like wall separating Grand River's world from the better life of the white mans existence. The Llurkers or Little People as the Cherokee call them, have told that Grand River has a great sickness. The disease comes as much from within the small community as without. The old ways have been forgotten and the people of Grand River are suffering for it.
