Sneak Peek

The road was busy with traffic, but there was nobody between us, and the way in front of her was clear. It was a small mercy there wasn’t anybody else on the sidewalk, but that didn’t preclude the possibility she might trip on a slab of concrete thirty feet in front of her, where a tree had been slowly pushing it up over the years. I’d tripped on it before, so I always took note of it as I passed, particularly since I was usually thinking something over and was at risk of tripping.

Just as I spoke up to warn her, a car lurched out of the busy street, screeching to a halt. Two men jumped out, each grabbing one of Aurelia’s arms.

“Hey!” I yelled, breaking into a sprint.

There was no way I’d catch them in time, even as I increased my speed, my bag bouncing against my back.

They took her into the vehicle, the first man pulling and the second pushing.

The second man saw me and grinned as he got back into the car, slamming the door shut.

The car was already pulling back into traffic. If anybody on the road had noticed what they’d done, they didn’t do anything about it. It happened so fast they might have missed what happened.

I had enough time to pull out my phone and snap a picture of the license plate before they drove away.
