THE LAST GREAT AMERICAN BEAUTY PAGEANT
Short Fiction
by Denise Dietz

What happens when a sleazy promoter blackmails a network CEO into televising a male beauty pageant a la Miss Whomever? What if the pageant is hosted by a horror-film actress who looks like "Little Orphan Annie during a menopausal heat flash"? What if the music for the pageant is provided by a rock group whose guitarist died on stage of a drug overdose, and the promoter's pretty assistant has an agenda all her own? What if Mr. Colorado sleeps with a knife on his bed stand ... the same knife he plans to use in the pageant's talent competition?

Mix all of the above ingredients together, season with a few celebrity judges, add a dash of black humor and a twist ending, and you get the quintessential reality show ... live! Or maybe not.
