It is Eighteenth-century London and criminals are rife throughout the city.
The Blind Magistrate, Sir John Fielding, otherwise known as 'The Blind Beak', has instigated the Bow Street Runners to combat them.
Among them is a man named Nick Rathburn, of a mysterious birth, who finds his luck coming and going throughout his life.
In one particular instance, he manages to fight his way out of Newgate Gaol and by some twist of fate, becomes a secret agent for 'The Blind Beak'.
Before long however, as Sir John, amidst the Gordon Riots, is in the hands of the terrorising mob, Nick faces the death on the gallows at Tyburn...
Ernest Dudley (23rd July 1908-01st February 2006) was born in Worcestershire and started acting in Ireland. He soon married Jane Graham, who was also an actor, before going onto write a variety of short stories and novels. He later became a reporter, as well as writing radio plays. He continued writing novels, stories and scripts until his death, aged 97.
