The Year's Best Science Fiction Fourteenth Annual Collection
(1997)(Book 14 in the Year's Best Science Fiction series)
An anthology of stories edited by Gardner Dozois
1998 Locus Award for Best Anthology
As usual, Gardner Dozois begins his annual best-of-the-year anthology with a comprehensive look at the year in science fiction, covering books, magazines, prozines, online zines, anthologies, short stories, novels, movies, television, awards, and deaths. Especially enjoyable is his summation of the publishing industry and the general state of science fiction. Then it's off to the races with a treasure chest of short stories that caught his eye during the year.
Well-known authors whose works appear in this edition include Gregory Benford, Michael Swanwick, Nancy Kress, James P. Blaylock, John Kessel, Robert Silverberg, Bruce Sterling, Mike Resnick, Charles Sheffield, Damien Broderick, Walter Jon Williams, and Stephen Baxter. Each of the 28 stories begins with an introduction and biography of the writer.
Standouts include "Immersion" by Gregory Benford, in which a husband and wife relax on their vacations by immersing themselves in a chimpanzee tribe; "The Flowers of Aulit Prison" by Nancy Kress, in which an alien who has always trusted the system has her beliefs challenged by the human she spies on in prision; and "Death Do Us Part" by Robert Silverberg, in which a woman deals with her mortality and youth in a society where regeneration virtually guarantees eternal life. In "The Land of Nod" by Mike Resnick, a conclusion to the Kirinyaga stories, an old and tired Koriba faces exile back in the real, westernized Kenya; in Robert Reed's "Chrysalis," a girl raised on a generational ship has trained since birth to deal with first contact situations, but has her assumptions are shattered when such a contact actually occurs; and "A Robot's Twilight Companion" by Tony Daniel recounts the story of a faithful and inquisitive robot in a style reminiscent of Asimov.
