Still reeling from a recent divorce and sworn off men, Det. Second Class Kate Flynn takes an evening jog and discovers a body in the park with no Id, wearing a sleek Armani suit.

Meanwhile, former journalist Andrew Wallace has written the Great American Novel but can't sell it, so he applies for a job writing catalog copy about mechanical gadgets for the Lexa Corporation. Mistaken for a high level executive candidate who hasn't shown up, Andrew's hired in his place by the eccentric Ceo.

Only slightly less astonishing is pushy exbomb squad turned homicide hotshot Sergeant Ed Bryan's determination to take Kate's mysterious murder case out of her hands and get her to agree to a date. In spite of his efforts, Kate stonewalls the date and identifies the dead man. He was one Anderson Wallis Kane, a wheeling, dealing, slightly disreputable international corporate adventurer, in La to accept a position at the Lexa Corporation.

Kate discovers he was supposed to have Andrew's sixfigure job, that Andrew hasn't a clue what he's doing and that Andrew is the same man she met on an airplane and was unduly attracted to on the very day she got her Reno divorce.

Stubbornly working to solve her case her way, Kate finds her life in danger, her car sabotaged, her jogging route boobytrapped, her condo on fire. And worse still she's fallen in love.
