After surviving attempts on her life while pursuing a murderer the previous autumn, investigative reporter Jess Kennard looks forward to springtime in Kentucky and her marriage to Det. Joe Schuler. Plans change drastically when Joe suffers life-threatening injuries from being forced off the road during a late winter snowstorm. The police seem to have no answers; when a body later turns up at the crash site, suspicion appears to fall on Joe, still comatose, as complicit in the death.
