Dr James Barry was, among other things, Inspector of General Hospitals, an army surgeon, and the first British Empire doctor to successfully perform a caesarean. Following ten years of detailed research, the authors have produced a fascinating biography - incorporating colour portraits - that dispels some of the myths surrounding this mysterious individual.
