"Oso" Moreno is a man with a specific skill set: he breaks things and shoots people. But he's a leg breaker beginning to feel the pangs of conscience. Haunted by his experience in Afghanistan he's a man adrift, looking for a place to belong but wary of commitment. He's sent to keep an eye on business at a new resort on Long Island's North Fork by his boss, who's interested in money laundering and getting cut in on the high-end development of the North Fork. Moreno knows he's there because he'll do as he's told and is capable of great violence when it's needed. Both capacities will be tested in ways neither man can anticipate.
Moreno begins to hope that he's leaving his old life behind. But he has choices to make: between B.J. Sullivan, the brash and ambitious manager of the Port Robertson Inn and Hana Ishikawa, the sensual adept of the Daito Ryu system of hand to hand combat. He stumbles on a murder related to a high stakes real estate swindle. And it turns out he's been put in Port Robertson by his boss to take the fall. Moreno comes to realize that he'll be forced to choose between his old life and his new one, between doing the right thing and doing the easy thing. And no matter his choice, his every action will have deadly consequences.
