When Rose Swenson, a mixed-race beauty, marries into a family of Swedish immigrants in the 1930's, she inadvertantly triggers the malice of local criminals, who conspire against, and then abduct Rose and her nephew Charlie. The two soon realize that their only hope for survival is to somehow escape their captors, and then dissappear into the wilderness. This book is steeped in the lore of the Great Plains, and the vibrant culture of the Sioux Nation. It transports readers to a time when independence, courage, love and family values were necessary qualities for living and surviving in the American frontier.
