Kathy Burton has had a tough life on the family farm in Lincolnshire, not least because her father is determined that she will marry a local boy whom she doesn't care for. Her escape takes her to the city of Lincoln where she starts work in a glamorous department store, and there falls in love with Tony Kendall, a man who has a reputation as a womaniser. But Kathy knows that Tony has a good heart, and spends most of his time caring for his possessive, but devious invalid mother. Kathy finds a social life in the local choral society, and when war starts, she enrolls as an entertainer for the troops. "Sing As We Go" is a rich, compelling regional saga, that portrays both the hardship and, at times, the fun of war.
