Gallaghers is set in the blighted backstreet tenements of 1980s Glasgow. One family is resolved not only to survive, but to prosper. Kate Gallagher knows what she wants in life. A dream husband, an ideal home, and adorable kids are high on her list. They also seem to be within her grasp. Her parents are horrified when Kate insists on marrying Pete Brodie, but after all, Kate is pregnant with his child. Delighted her stubbornness has paid off, Kate eagerly awaits the wedding. She is soon disillusioned. Pete doesn't love her, misery is part of daily life, and her only joy is her baby. Yet Kate won't give up. She sets her brother up in the ice cream business, making the ice cream herself. Prudently, Kate puts her share of money into a secret account. Somehow she knows how crucial the money will become.
