Interval for Death
(2023)(The seventh book in the Inspector Lazarus Mystery series)
A novel by Suzanne Downes
A night at the theatre ends in the most horrific way for Dr Scattergood and his family. An actor on stage is fatally stabbed when the prop dagger fails to retract.
It seems to be a tragic accident, but all too soon it appears that Philo Smart had not been popular with his fellow players and one of them could easily have swapped a prop dagger for the real thing.
To add to the drama, Chad Scattergood, the doctors eldest son, has been fancying himself in love with the leading lady, the former lover of the victim, with whom he had quarrelled bitterly over the affections of Miss Phyllida Vayne, and thus Chad finds himself a suspect in the murder.
Chad is the brother of Superintendent Tipladys wife Thora, a fact which complicates the case for Sergeant Stonier and Inspector Lazarus, but which they are determined will not stop them from investigating thoroughly.
Inspector Lazarus is also busy trying to identify the body of a man found hanging in a remote, disused barn and would prefer not to have to deal with a company of over-acting thespians intent on protecting one of their own.
Genre: Historical
