The constant stream of visitors to the Spa towns of Hanbury and Braxton keep Inspector Lazarus and Sergeant Stonier ever vigilant. Amongst the invalids who come to take the waters and benefit from the thermal baths, there is always a collection of charlatans, criminals and swindlers who wish to prey upon the vulnerable.
Mr and Mrs Pardoe are offering to sell shares in a gold mine in Australia, Miss Elizabeth Virgo claims to be a clairvoyant, who can contact the late Lord Allingham for his loving daughter Arabella, and Countess Vanessa Kokic has miraculous cosmetics for sale, promising eternal youth and beauty to those who can afford to buy them.
It falls to Braxton Constabulary to unmask possible offenders and try and protect the public from them. With all this happening, Lazarus feels he has quite enough to keep him busy, but there is more to come. The much-wronged Elspeth Foxcroft has disappeared whilst on holiday in Whitby with her husband Clement, and Lazarus finds himself heading for Yorkshire to assist in the search.
