Angel Eyes

(1991)
A novel by

If Rake Cordigan knows anything, it's that women are trouble. Even worse, a woman alone in a buckboard on a backwoods trail, in disguise. As a nun. She's either running from something or someone, or -- likely -- both. Not his problem. Except when the boy shows up. Someone she knows. And yet something's not right, he senses it, she knows it. He can't leave her alone with just the boy when there are shadow riders poised to attack her.

Rake is no woman's knight errant, but he knows trouble when he sees it. And he knows he's only letting himself in for more trouble when he rescues her. It means their being together in close quarters until she's ready to tell him the truth.

With every minute, he questions that she's even a nun -- her eyes are too desperate, she's too beautiful and she hasn't once uttered a prayer.. Give her one thing: disguising herself as a nun is a sure way to keep a man at a far distance. But not here, not with him, not with that sharp tongue, unbelievable story, and lovely face. He promises himself he'll only keep her until he gets to the truth, but even if she confesses everything, can he really let her go?
