The place is New York, the time now. Regina, an actress in her forties, returns to the stage to appear in a revival of Chekhov's The Seagull, in which she had her first real triumph. A simple but tragic mistake hurls her from the orbit of unfeeling in which her life has moved into a series of confrontations - with the theater itself, with her children and husband, and with the menacing presence of the city and the strange figure who is its unlikely prophet.
