Clash of the Titans

(1981)
A novel by

A condensed and more than a little bit veering off from the mythological tales, this is the story of Perseus and Andromeda, Pegasus and the slaying of the Gorgon Medusa. In the book, Andromeda is under a goddess-spawned curse for refusing to marry the goddess' son after his form has been changed to reflect his personality. Zeus' son Perseus has been saved from the ocean waves by the intervention of Zeus and Poseidon and left to grow up unknowing of his royal heritage, until the goddess decides its time that Perseus learn to fend for himself. Perseus sees Andromeda, falls in love, and vows to rescue her from her curse. Since this tale is widely known, the side characters of Bubo the Owl, the soldiers that accompany Perseus on his quest for Medusa, and those selfsame mythical characters of the Medusa, Pegasus, the Kraken and the evil Calibos, are little more interesting and three dimensional. The book does have a happy ending, as well as a warning. Be careful what you say, do not boast that you are better than the gods.
