Sometimes it seems to Katherine Walden - single, attractive and thirtysomething - that she is living everyone's life but her own. She writes other people's books, participates in other people's social schemes and sleeps with another woman's man. Her four best female friends just don't approve of Kitty's vicarious existence. They are full of advice on how she should live - and in particular what she should do about Nick, her twice-a-week lover with a wife and kids in the suburbs. They think Nick should leave home and move in with Katherine though she herself is not so sure - she rather likes things the way they are. And when Nick does flee the nest and take up residence, Katherine finds out at first hand exactly why she didn't want this to happen.
