This small (11 X 16 cm), blue cloth hardcover without dustjacket contains brief sketches and detailed criticism of some of the members of the Pre-Raphaelite movement--a group of 19th century English painters, poets, and critics who reacted against the Victorian conventions of the time by producing quasi-religious works inspired by medieval and early Renaissance painters (up to the time of the Italian painter Raphael.) Influenced in part by the teachings of John Ruskin, it "was a return to Nature, nothing more, nothing less." Famous Pre-Raphaelites included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Ford Madox Brown, John Everett Millais, and Thomas Woolner. There are numerous examples of pre-Raphaelite art in black-and-white photographs throughout the book.
