The end of the Civil War finds California suffering through a great drought. Crops and cattle are dying throughout the valley and the last producing well belongs to Bruno Meurer, one of the German settlers whose dress, language-and apparent abundance-aggrevate neighbors. Convinced the "foreigns" are draining off the valley's precious water, and unaware that Bruno's well is almost depleted, or that the desperate immigrants have a hired a rainmaker to save them, ranchers resolve to destroy the settlers and their farms, and confiscate Bruno's well.
