Twelve-year-old John Pearson's summer becomes infinitely more interesting when three illegal aliens call attention to Rosemont's ongoing labor dispute by injuring themselves. The trio's costly medical treatment triggers legislation requiring birth certificates for anyone receiving city, county, or state services. This prevents undocumented parents from registering their American-born children for school and makes aiding illegal aliens, and failing to report anyone suspected of being an illegal alien, criminal acts.
The first casualty is Henry Pearson, John's father, The Rosemont deputy is fired for refusing to evict the injured men from the hospital. The second casualty is Eduina Cardenas, a Gold Star mother with twenty-six years running the school cafeteria.
With classes but a week away, Ida Mae Watson, the school nurse, convinces Henry Pearson and Rose Portillo, from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, that American-born children of undocumented immigrants must be allowed to continue their education. The Escondidas Reading Club is that effort.
