Despite the conventions of the age, Auriol Stanford was determined not to be forced by her stepfather into a marriage of convenience. The chosen bridegroom was the Duke of Hampden, a man of high rank but of low morals, and no fortune. He was a man who paid her no court - unlike most of the other eligible men of her acquaintance. However, Auriol was not to know that the Duke had a very strong reason for wanting her as his wife, apart from her considerable wealth.
