Twenty years have passed since Miranda - now Lady Dornford - rescued Luke, a sweep's apprentice, from his cruel master. Luke arrives back after having distinguished himself against Napoleon's forces. Whilst he has been away, Miranda's eldest daughter, Kassia, has grown to womanhood and her feelings for Luke have ripened into love. He, however, is well aware that the difference in their stations is a bar to any marriage. Then an incident gives Kassia hope for their future - but she finds herself in deadly danger.
