It was an easy film shoot on an uninhabited island. What could possibly go wrong?
Barrett Cavanaugh's career was circling the drain. Once a highly sought after cinematographer, bad luck and putting his trust in the wrong people had taken its toll. When an old friend offers a chance to prove he still has what it takes, Barrett heads to the South Pacific with a small film crew. His intent was to resurrect his career. He didn't foresee falling for Dr. Rowena Abernathy, a last minute addition to the crew. When he discovers the island isn't quite the paradise he'd hoped for, and things go from bad to worse, can Barrett summon his inner hero to save his friends and the new woman in his life?
For Barrett Cavanaugh, being a hero is inescapable. He just can't help himself. But he always tries to follow rule number one - Don't do anything stupid.
Barrett, Rowena and their friends head to Peru to document the excavation of El Valle de las Lagrimas, a village buried in the rain forest for nearly a thousand years. When a black cat saunters through the encampment, the local diggers consider it bad luck and the bringer of espiritus malignos. The practical Americans respect the locals beliefs, but put no stock in their superstitions. They soon learn that perhaps the little black gato isn't as innocent as he seems. Before long, Barrett finds himself fighting for those he holds most dear. Can Barrett, the reluctant hero, save the day again? Or this time, are they finally out of luck?
Do you believe in monsters? A skeptical Barrett and his friends find themselves facing that question when they head to Lake Wycolvia to document its resident monster, Wylie.
When it appears Wylie has gone rogue and killed a local citizen, their skepticism turns into curiosity. As the bodies add up, Barrett wonders if there really is a monster living in Lake Wycolvia. The film crew become sleuths, facing intrigue and danger, as they attempt to solve the mystery of Wylie, the monster who has come out of the deep.
Barrett Cavanaugh, family man? Seems he's finally made it. He's reached his fiftieth year, relatively intact, with a lifetime of adventures under his belt. Is it time to hang up his cape?
He considers the possibility as he suffers through Birthday Week; seven days of little adventures leading up to the big day. But a hero's work is never done, and there's always another adventure right around the corner. No matter how hard he tries, Barrett can't escape his true nature. When an earthquake interrupts the final birthday celebration, Barrett and his friends must, once more, figure out how to survive without breaking Rule Number One - Don't do anything stupid.
