When Maddy befriends her neighbour Jean, she is relieved to have found someone who is not as shallow as some of her other friends. Instead, Jean seems kind and down to earth, even shy and lacking in self-confidence. When Jean experiences a life-changing blow, Maddy and her husband are there to help and the lives of the two families become increasingly intertwined.
