Ronald Frame was born in Glasgow, and educated there and at Oxford University.

He was joint-winner of the first Betty Trask Prize for his novel Winter Journey, and in 2000 received the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award for The Lantern Bearers (also honoured by the American Library Association, and being developed as a feature film).
