Two Hearts in Retreat
(2022)(Book 18 in the Two Hearts Wounded Warrior Romance series)
A novel by Tamara Ferguson
Mel’s an R.N., and Steve’s an ex-Navy medic and physical therapist. Although they’re instantly attracted, they’ve both suffered incredible loss with the death of their significant other. Will they ever be healed enough to stop their sparring and finally admit that the attraction they’re fighting just might be love?
Melinda McDaniel has everything she’s ever wanted. Newly engaged and soon to be an RN, she’s on the fast track for promotion after deciding she’ll specialize in orthopedics. Even discovering she’s pregnant doesn’t dampen her enthusiasm for the future since she and Alex were planning on having kids eventually anyway.
But then tragedy strikes, and through no fault of her own, Mel unexpectedly loses the baby. Still grieving when there’s a knock on the door, Alex’s parents and an Air Force chaplain arrive to give her the worst news possible. Alex, an Air Force pilot also known as Hawk, has been killed in action in Iraq.
Devastated, Mel tries to move forward with her life. When she’s attempting to visit Hawk’s best friend, Luke Bryant, who refuses to have visitors, she meets Jake Loughlin, a friend of Luke’s. She's surprised to receive a job offer at the newly built Wounded Warrior Home in Crystal Rock, Wisconsin. Maybe change would be good, Mel eventually decides, since everything in Madison reminds her of Hawk.
Steve Ryder is also trying to move on with his life after his wife has died of cancer. Nearly ready to train to become a Navy Seal, he gave up his career in the Navy to take care of his wife, Amy, while continuing his education and becoming a physical therapist. Once she’s gone, he decides he needs a change. Besides, there was a shortage of decent medical jobs in his hometown of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, whereas physical therapists were in demand throughout the state.
Steve decides to get out of town for Christmas, ending up at the Dragonfly Pointe Inn, which is coincidentally owned by Jake Loughlin, one of the founders of the newly built Crystal Rock Wounded Warrior Home.
Overhearing a conversation nearby when he’s eating lunch at the Inn’s restaurant, Steve approaches Jake and asks if he might apply for one of the positions available. Not only does Steve get the position, but he also discovers he’s exactly the kind of person that Jake had been looking for to manage the entire physical therapy program because of his military and personal life experience with PTSD as well as loss.
Sparks fly when Mel and Steve meet, but Mel is not even close to being ready for a new relationship, even one year after Hawk’s death, so she keeps Steve at arm’s length, even when they’re working together. Will they ever be healed enough to stop their sparring and finally admit that the attraction they’re fighting just might be love?
The full-length version of TWO HEARTS UNDONE.
