A decade ago when I began organizing and writing The Order of the Rose, I was constantly told 'no one's reading historical fiction, stick to historical romance' and 'no one's going to read long books so take out all that background stuff.' I removed, sticking to the romance, and cut the first two books nearly in half.
Yet the 2 and 3 star reviews all complained about things that would have been answered with the material left in.
I saved everything that I cut, hoping to fit it into a future book. And realized they were their own book.
