Between 1988 and 1989 the author underwent a journey through the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The result is this book which is an account of his encounters with people and places in Eastern Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Albania. Anton Gill travelled mainly by car and rail and being fluent in several languages he was able to question the local people about aspects of history, politics, religion, art, sex, food and drink. The reader is able to follow advice on where to go and where to stay from baroque towns in Czechoslavakia to the flat plains of Hungary and from the spa towns of the Danube to the villages of Transylvania. Descriptions of the sights and sounds of the cities are also given.
