A novel by

Ellie Starling is a medical student entering her final term of training. A small-town girl, she has worked long and hard to reach her goal. Always shy, she enters the term still thinking that people see her as a kid and doubting her abilities. She discovers that her roommate has eloped, leaving her with both halves of the rent to pay. As she worries about paying the rent and finding a new roommate, she becomes friendly with an old boyfriend who seems like too much of a distraction. She wants to focus on her final term but realizes that some distractions cannot be ignored.

Mack Macauley, a former combat medic, is older than many of the other students in med school. Suffering from occasional bouts of PTSD he begins to deal with issues from combat and underlying family issues he has never acknowledged. He knows that he has no business getting involved with anyone, but he cannot ignore his attraction to Ellie. As he begins his rotation in psychiatry, he becomes invested in a veteran also suffering from PTSD. He thinks he has made progress with Sam, but a set-back sends him over the edge. Blaming himself for not preventing Sam’s suicide, Mack sinks into a dark abyss. Only Ellie can draw him back to the man he is supposed to be: someone who can help others.
