A traveling peddler reaches a wayside inn just ahead of hungry wolves, and finds every room shared by as many weary travelers as will fit, every table in the taproom claimed as a bed. Save for the haunted attic. Too cold and wet to survive a night in the stables or out in the forest, he braves the attic, and hears whispers in his dreams. Whispers that drive him to seek out the dead, and avenge them. Whispers that will be part of his probably short life henceforth, as the skull floating at his shoulder talks on
