Private Detective Simon Lash, a collector of Americana, is not very impressed when confronted with a Desert Rat calling himself Lansford Hastings, who has in his possession a small box and asks Lash to find the owner. Lash is reluctant to help. As he points out to his assistant, Eddie Slocum, a Lansford Hastings was part of the Donner Party, who in 1846 crossed the plains and mountains to California by wagon train - but he died in 1870. So who is this other Lansford Hastings?
