The Family Guareschi
(1968)Chronicles of the Past And Present
A non fiction book by Giovanni Guareschi
By Roberta W. Proctor on January 15, 2013 I was a fan of Giovanni Guareschi's Don Camillo stories for years, and also enjoyed Guareschi's wryly humorous autobiographical account of his family. I left that book behind on a summer vacation in the 1970s and was never able to replace it until it occurred to me to try Amazon. So I ordered all the Don Camillo books that I didn't have or that I wanted to replace on the grounds that my old copies were falling apart. To my surprise, two autobiographical books, "The Family Guareschi" and "My Home, Sweet Home," were available. I got both. The other one was what I remembered, but both are excellent. For those unfamiliar with Guareschi, he was an anti-Communistic cartoonist and writer, whose post-WWII stories of the Roman Catholic priest Don Camillo and the Communist mayor Peppone--personal friends and political enemies to each other--are both funny and thought-provoking commentaries on post-war Italy.
